If you have a spinal cord injury caused by a motor-vehicle, the TAC will be your insurance provider. The TAC pays for treatment and benefits for people injured in transport accidents. It is also involved in promoting road safety in Victoria and in improving Victoria's trauma system. It funds these functions through payments made by Victorian motorists, when they register their vehicles with VicRoads.

No-fault scheme[edit]

The TAC is a 'no-fault' scheme. Medical benefits will be paid to you if you are injured, regardless of who caused the accident. It is also a long-term compensation scheme, which means that if you have a serious injury you will be provided with lifetime care if necessary.

Who can claim?[edit]

The TAC covers transport accidents directly caused by the driving of a car, motorcycle, bus, train or tram. The organisation pays benefits to people injured as a:

  • driver
  • passenger
  • pedestrian
  • motorcyclist, or
  • cyclist

What does the TAC pay for?[edit]

The TAC can pay for the costs of medical treatment for injuries sustained in a transport accident. These include ambulance, hospital, medical, chemist, therapy, dental and nursing services.

It may also pay for the reasonable cost of other non-medical services and items you need due to your injuries. These can be travel costs to treatment appointments, or equipment to help overcome accident injuries.

The types of treatment and benefits the TAC pays for will depend on:

  • what can be paid for under the legislation
  • your individual circumstances, and
  • what is reasonable in relation to the need for and cost of the service.

Benefits the TAC can pay include income, impairment and common law benefits.
