I’d really like to find out more about hiring carers myself rather than using an agency. I’m interested in people’s thoughts.

It can change from some states but in Vic and SA there is a scheme called MORIA i have recently joined and find it flexible in using different agencies. Once set up you can then pay an agency a nominal fee, say 5% to put your carer on there books . You would then be responsible for all Training,Super , Wages ect

I'm currently with MOIRA and they are merely a payment portal. There is no advice and they can be slow to process payments. It is YOUR responsibility to monitor expenditure and payments from your ISP Allocation.

In July I progress to Direct Payments where my monthly ISP is paid into a separate bank account and I have to keep full records of payments made and DHS will require authorisation paperwork for any abnormal payments not in my ISP. Will be much better to have full control but much more responsibility to abide by rules and justify payments.

Direct Payments is the DHS preferred next step for as many ISP people as possible.

Step after that is Direct Employment whereby you can employ people directly but this entails, Workcover insurance, Super contributions, PAYE Tax, GST (likely), auditing etc. This is much more complex but has been trialed successfully.
